Execute Agenda 21

Have you ever heard of Agenda 21?  As of about a month ago, I had not.  Apparently, it is a plan instituted by the United Nations to regulate land usage throughout the globe.  According to the brief description on the UN website, “Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally and locally by organizations of the United Nations System, Governments, and Major Groups in every area in which human impacts on the environment.”

Now that description doesn’t really tell you much does it?  But it does sound like it could be part of some devious plot hatched by the Emperor in the Star Wars universe, doesn’t it?  I can hear it now.  “Regional Governors will now have direct control over all land in their territories.  Execute Agenda 21!”

Seriously though, the thought of any supranational unelected body dictating order from their sovereign headquarters is a creepy thought.  After all, isn’t the supposed goal of the American experiment to allow states, localities, and individuals to control most of their own destiny, not be ruled by some bureaucrats hundreds of miles away?

To further dialogue on this issue, the Shenandoah Valley Tea Party is holding an information session this coming Thursday starting at 7 PM at the Augusta County Government Center (18 Government Center Lane, Verona, VA).  Both Delegate Bob Marshall and Donna Holt of the Virginia Campaign for Liberty will be talking on the subject.  I would advise arriving early as I expect the event to be well attended; there should be a far greater crowd than just the two gentlemen you might expect.  (Does that line merit a groan?)

I’m hoping that this issue is merely some sort of conspiracy theory blown out of proportion.  Then again, if there is some sort of foul plot about that strips us of our rights, as some people suggest, then the public must be alerted of this danger.  I plan on attending this event to learn more and I hope you will be able to make it as well.

  1. So wait… (and I am not asking this to make fun, but to be sure I understand) The Shenandoah Tea Party his holding an informational session on a 20 year old set of sustainable development recommendations that was approved as a feel good gesture by countries that had no intention of listening to them that even the UN admitted was a complete failure 5 after creating it?

    1. Thank you for your comment.

You raise an important point. Is Agenda 21 some failed policy from decades ago that has no practical purpose or is it some modern plot to round up citizens like cattle? Again, I don’t know too much about this issue, but as it seems to be important to members of the Tea Party, I figure I should find out more. Perhaps my piece about it seemed like a little too like sensationalism, and maybe it was. I do not claim that I am convinced that Agenda 21 is evil, just merely pointing out what others have said.

Unfortunately, conspiracy theories can easily undermine the credibility of a group. During the Ron Paul campaign, a small element insisted that 9-11 was an inside job. Although a vast majority of us didn’t believe these unsubstantiated stories, as a result, our opponents tried to label the whole lot of us as crazy.

One should never be afraid to ask questions. At the same time, one should not promote radical ideas without some sort of proof to back them up. If the hype around Agenda 21 seems to be true, then I suggest that everyone should learn more about it. On the other hand, if it happens to be nothing more than you suggest, then the Tea Party would do well to not dwell on the topic. To do otherwise would be disastrous. I hope that I will have an answer to this question after Thursday.

The bottom line is that if the Tea Party becomes mired in baseless fears and rumors, it will discredit itself and cease to be a useful organization. Given the potential value of the movement I don’t want that to happen, so I’ll be keeping a close eye on things to see how this issue progresses.
